Vision/Excalibur -biggest mega club in Chicago, 3 stories and 4 DJ stages... I love getting wasted, and then lost in this place... The top (roof) DJ stage is my dream venue... look out for the hot Euros at that beer stands!

Crobar -great ergonomics! (I LOVE standing behind/next to the DJ -and even reading his selections on serato)... and the Euros here are HOT! Fri/Sat has great new bumpin' Electro.

jedynka -most polish beauties in one place I've found yet! -also have lingerie and miniskirt contests... (too bad I've missed every one thus far...) uhm, the music/venue... its alright. -Did I mention the babes?

Cafe Lura -another great polish hangout... they even have DnB here sometimes!

Smartbar -good sound, good space, good acts... too far north, and too many poles. (uhm, I meant "pole smokers" this time... not that that's bad or nothin'... just prefer hot babes, that's all...)

Harddrive -swanky cheese, at the Hyatt on Wacker, best when you get on the VIP list and get top-shelf for free for 2 hours..

Transit -for mainstream hip-hop, booty-shakin' midgets in miniskirts smokin' blunts on the dance floor; over-weight white chicks shakin' it in guys faces; ho's on poles; and latina's fighting in miniskirts on the street: definitely the most roudy club I've been to...

Red No 5 - uhm, one room, people gettin' down..

Ruby - yah, same thing as Red No 5

Sonotheque -one of my favorites, very LOUD...

Lava Lounge -nice, small, great location
Zentra - hiphop down stairs, bad versions of progressive upstairs?.... and a hookah lounge!

Green Dolphin (Boom Boom Mondays) -Dude, stay away from the long islands!!!

Jbar -right in the heart of the tourists, swanky little basement, just needs good music... (and someone else payin' for drinks!)

Wax -Dude, I LOVE this small space shuttle!!!

Ok, that's enough for now...

While I love getting the originals (of course)... I also very much appreciate DJ Mix recordings, especially when its a true (ie.long) mix, where the 2 songs make love to eachother and produce a third product that has never been done before. Thet's remixing on the fly, and when its done manually (with hardware, not software) and done RIGHT.... -that's always gotten me the most excited, because that's when playing other people's music (that is not just "stealing" or "cheating", but hopefully actually paying credence to those that came before!..) becomes really fricken special. -Ok, so that doesn't answer the original question, but that does pay credence to those that came before;)

It was once suggested to me that a good mix (or evening of mixes) could be most successful by patterning after the female orgasm. Not the usual male orgasm that just goes UP and then peaks and ends with a lull (not that I don't appreciate that of course...) but females who have a clue how things work (and even better when they have a partner to help them..), can make it go UP and then down a little, and then UP-UP, and then down a little, and the UP-UP-UP... WHOA!... and then down a little... and then go UP and UP again.... and just do a roller-coaster of crescendo to a really, really high up.

Yah, I'm no where near there with my mixing, but that's the plan at least...

Back in the day, mix tapes were basically shoody, low volume recordings from the radio or if you were lucky, a rave. The purpose was to hear songs that you couldn't get at your local record store as well as to listen to your favorite DJ's mixing style. Today, and for some years now, every DJ basically sounds the same - long, perfectly blended (and now harmonically) mixed music.
Personally, if you had me listen to 2 mixes from 2 of the biggest DJ's today I probably wouldn't be able to tell them apart. But give me 2 mix tapes from the early to mid-90's and there would be two distinct styles that you could easily tell apart.
I used to really love mix tapes but now I would much rather have the source recording and mix and match on my own.

I've planned mixes for live shows. I've tried to create a climactic arc, with a catchy or recognizable track about a quarter to halfway in to really grab audience attention. Then building to some stomping rollers, and ending with something more chill to bring the mood back down and keep the smiles on, like a cigarette after sex.

I've always wondered is how big is the market for recorded DJ mixes? I've never really been into them, preferring to hear the original source tracks. What's the purpose of a mix recording?

Since I've already ot the Traktor DJ Studio software, I figure I'll get the new hardware and start playing with that. I'm also seeing more DJ's use Ableton Live with a midi controller.

Generally, at clubs I've found the standard setup is:

My favorites right now are Smartbar, Darkroom, Sonotheque, and the Metro.

Smartbar has had great DJs everytime I've been there, and their new layout with the soundproofing makes a conversation possible in the wings, and booty shaking still strong on the floor.

Sonotheque has the best sound system I've heard in Chicago. Period.

Darkroom has a comfortable lounge atmosphere, with eclectic musical acts. My favorite bar to just hang out in.

The Metro has 20ft walls of speakers pumping out bass that rattles your ribcage, along with some world-class acts. Plus they usually let you into Smartbar if it's open.

Still haven't made it out to Crobar or Smartbar or any of the other "super clubs"
