To be honest, as much as I like both of their music, this whole thing can't be good. Reminds me of a soft way of reincarnating the East Coast West Coast war in the 90's.

Whatever, it's just more fuel to the fire that contributes to the bad publicity of today's hip-hop, that is, mainstream hip-pop.

I am with the previous posters, I miss the 90's, particularly 1994 but that's just me. Myself, like Marcus, got into Hip-Hop (and r&b) before electronic music and there hasn't been a reason to look back since.

With that said, there is stuff that's good but it will never be heard because of the demise of the music industry. In that, if you don't have a brand behind your name (50 cent/Kanye), you may as well hit the streets and promote it yourself and wish for the best.

Sad but true.

Kanye vs. 50

I like how this friendly competition between Kanye West and 50 Cent has turned into a campaign against 50 Cent. If you're unawares, both drop their new albums on September 11, so there's speculation as to who will sell the most records. And 50 went so far as to so that he would stop producing albums if Kanye sold more than him. Ha!

Now I'm starting to see all these articles encouraging people to buy Kanye's new album just to keep 50 from making more. It's amusiing but it's making me think, "Is it finally happening? Are people really tiring of the cRap music on the radio these days? Will real hip hop make a comeback?"

As someone who grew up on hip hop, and is now in his crotchety 30's, I have been disappointed with most of what I'm hearing on the radio these days (and not just the hip hop genre). It seems like anybody with a drum machine can get a deal these days, as long as they have a beat that can sell as a ringtone. So I'm looking forward to some diversity in what we hear in the mainstream media. Then maybe people won't snicker when I tell them I still listen to De La Soul.

This sort of goes back to my post about hip hop being dead. But I guess DJ Premier's words about "underground forever baby" ring true.

Thoughts?

Here is an interesting article on Rolling Stone about the decline of the music industry. I think the point that realy struck a chord with me is how the industry did not take advantage of Napster. They had golden opportunity to monetize that service, but instead they sued them out of business. And at that point, people started to see less value in music as a product.

1. They cut their samples so that they end right at the end of a build up to make you want it
2. The "most popular" lists always seem to be the newest releases. I kind of doubt that
3. They have territorial restrictions that won't allow you to purchase certain tracks
